Our research consists of the laboratories of Drs. A. Wayne Orr, Chris Kevil, Shenuarin Bhuiyan, Nirav Dhanesha, Xiangqin He, Gopi Kolluru, Tarek Magdy, Oren Rom, Amr Salem, and Xinggui Shen. From a basic science perspective, our combined research explores cell-matrix interactions, cell signaling, biochemical redox biology, metabolism, and regulation of autophagy in chronic inflammation and cardiometabolic disease. These basic science themes are translated to the study of the initiation and progression of complications resulting from long term diabetes mellitus, including atherosclerosis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, cardiac failure, and ischemic vascular disease. Funding for our research programs comes from the NIH (NIDDK, NHLBI), the American Diabetes Association, and the American Heart Association.  In 2020, NIH grant income exceeded $4.3 million ranking our relatively small research division at #43 nationally among Pathology Departments.

RESEARCH DIVISION ACTIVITIES

The Division of Research sponsors a weekly “Molecular Basis of Disease Journal Club”. The Division also sponsors a monthly Seminar Series, which has rapidly become recognized throughout LSU Health Shreveport for its excellence in recruiting “cutting edge” extramural speakers to participate in the Series. The Division provides research opportunities for Medical Students as well as Residents and Fellows from the Department of Pathology and other clinical departments. In addition, the Division provides research training for a number of Post-doctoral Fellows and for Graduate Students from the Departments of Cell Biology and Anatomy and Molecular and Cellular Physiology.
